Consider the vote Barack'd. Were you out last night in Brooklyn? It was crazy, as evidenced by celebrating cops and spontaneous yelling and a packed Bedford Avenue. L to the Izzo Leitzell captured all the crazy energy with these amazing pictures of last night's festivities.
Williamsburg is Dead BFF Lizzie Leitzell took some awesome Halloween photos around the 'hood on Friday night. Enjoy!
You only have until this Saturday 'til Todd Seelie's show "Slowdancing to Slayer" goes away forever, and you will be left to rue your missed opportunity in a sea of sweet Belgian booze down the street at Spuyten Duyvil. Catch it at Cinders Gallery (103 Havemeyer), open Wed-Fri 2pm-8pm and Sat 12pm-7pm.
DO
Check out Vice's month-long photo show at their temporary gallery at 99 N 10th St. Photogs include Dana Goldstein, Richard Kern, Patrick O'Dell, Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and many more.
DON'T
Show up looking like this guy.
Thank god for MUG. They totally tipped me off to this great fine art photo mag called Capricious, which is run right here in Williamsburg. They have a gallery space at 103 Bedford Ave called Capricious Space, where they are premiering a group show called And then, what then tonight. I might hit it up after checking out Gabrielle Bell at Desert Island. Seriously, I love my neighborhood.
I was reading MUG today (sign up for their newsletter, it's fantastic) and I discovered this cool site Brooklynpix.com. You can basically buy any 8x10 pic for $30 and there are some really interesting photos of Williamsburg like the intersection of Metropolitan and Union with a horse-drawn cart from 1918. Other highlights? A photo of Betty Smith, author of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, toasting with Karl Luger; McKibbin Street full of life in the 1950s; and kids hanging outside of a soda shop in 1944. Mmmm, nostalgia-y.
3rd Ward might be the best thing about Bushwick. This Saturday the art space is presenting "31 Under 31: Young Women in Art Photography," a show presenting work from all over the world by women under the age of 31.
Some of my personal favorites are Sara Padgett, Alex Van Clief and Nadine Rovner, but all of them are tremendously talented. Check out the event this Saturday, March 1 through March 28.
